A Lesson From History: Is There a Breakpoint… ?

Two Kings tried to bend constitutional government to their will — and paid for it.
In 1830, France’s Charles X, frustrated by hostile elections and a free press, issued the July Ordinances to muzzle newspapers and remake the electorate; the effect was instantaneous: street uprising, regime collapse, and his own abdication within weeks — consequences that hardened Europe’s resolve that throttling legal process invites revolution.
Four years later, Britain’s William IV dismissed the reform-minded Melbourne Ministry to install Sirt Robert Peel without a Commons majority. The immediate effect was parliamentary backlash and a rapid Whig return. The longer-term consequence was decisive: the Crown’s right to “choose” a government against the legislature quickly withered, cementing parliamentary supremacy.
The rhyme for today is not monarchy but brinkmanship: attempts to rule by executive fiat — whether weakening chambers, holding them hostage, or placing unqualified loyalists in top jobs. These actions ten to concentrate accountability, galvanize citizens’ opposition, and accelerate the adoption of new norms that limit such tactics. As law-makers appear uninterested in governing and leave the government closed, history suggests a day when the effect will be swift, and the consequence will be a stronger push to curb shutdown leverage, making re-opening government not a concession, but a way to avoid Charles X –style abdication and William IV –style humiliation

Strategically, how should businesses respond?
We have to become much more economically dynamic and competitive. By this, I mean you must invest in building your own long-term capacity and reinforce your own brand. This demands a focus on growth and on real investment in margin improvement technologies.
This new order will take time, and until then, all of us — business an individuals alike — must brace for growing turbulence, because the old rules no longer apply and the new ones haven’t been written yet.
But the good news is that history isn’t deterministic. Trajectories shift when people keep the possibility of something better long enough for an opportunity to appear. We need a lot more empathy, more leadership. We need more cooperation and trust. We must invent new communities grounded in truth, bolstered by action, and that foster cooperation, not division. That’s hard. But there is not secret level to pull. There is no hidden strategy that makes this easier. We don’t have a choice but to do the new ourselves. Leaders must stand in their own power.
